Last Race

The last time I ran competitively for my teenage athletics team was 7 years ago at a meet in Salford. Aunty Anthonia had come to watch me and had brought Nedum with her as my parents couldn't make it. I was 15/16 and it was the first time that I had ran in the men's league and needless to say I was nervous. I just didn't want to embarrass myself. But before the race Aunty had relaxed me, made me laugh looking over at the other runners: 'he looks rubbish, you'll win this easily'. When the gun sounded to mark the start of the race, all I could hear was Aunty shouting my name from the side of the track, her loud, confident and commanding voice drowning out the rest of the race noise. Suffice to say I won that race. comfortably. I was even able able to afford a Usain Boltesque jogged finish. Because she was my fan club. I had to make her proud. And that is indicative of the way she has always been. She has championed me, been there for me, loved and supported me at every given opportunity. I truly cannot express how much I owe my Aunty. She has helped me and pushed me to work towards my dreams and goals and her love and support has always been invaluable. I am forever overwhelmed with gratitude and I can only trust that she knows how much I love her. I promise to do my best, to strive to achieve and to continue to make her proud like I did on the day of my last race. I love and Miss you Aunty. Udy
